Ending your tenancy

In some circumstances we may agree to a shorter notice period with you (in writing). Agreement for a shorter notice period may be given if:

• you are moving to another council property
• you are moving to a housing association property
• you are moving into residential care
• other special reasons

If you are joint tenants both of you must agree to a shorter notice period.

If you are a fixed-term tenant with the Council you have the right to surrender your tenancy, as long as you don’t owe us rent and you have kept to the terms of your tenancy agreement. If you owe us rent or you haven’t kept to the terms of your tenancy agreement, we may still allow you to surrender your tenancy. You will still be required to give four weeks notice unless we agree a shorter notice period with you (in writing).

If you are joint tenants both of you must agree to surrender the tenancy.

When you end your tenancy you must give vacant possession, which means that you cannot leave someone living in the property. You must remove all belongings and rubbish from the property, garden, garage and shed. If anything is left behind we may think that you no longer need it and we may dispose of it. You will be charged for the costs of removing anything you have left behind and any damage to the property. You must also return all keys and fobs.
