Most council homes are let on a secure tenancy following the successful completion of an introductory tenancy.  A secure tenancy is often referred to as a ‘tenancy for life’.

A secure tenancy allows you to remain in your home provided you keep to the terms of your tenancy agreement.

A secure tenancy can only end if:

  • You choose to end the tenancy
  • The tenancy is ended through legal action because of a breach of the tenancy agreement
  • A joint tenant ends the tenancy by giving notice

Tenants transferring from another secure or assured tenancy will normally retain their security of tenure, except in certain circumstances such as some mutual exchanges.  Please visit our Mutual Exchange page for more information on exchanging your home.

If a secure tenant, a member of their household, or a visitor, carries out acts of anti-social behaviour, the Council can apply to the court for a Demotion Order. This has the effect of terminating a secure tenancy and replacing it with a Demoted Tenancy.
