Most new council tenants will start with an introductory tenancy. This tenancy normally lasts for 12 months.
If you successfully manage your tenancy during this period, you will usually become a secure tenant. In some circumstances, you may be offered a fixed-term tenancy instead.
Introductory tenants do not normally have the right to:
- Buy their home through the Right to Buy scheme
- Exchange their home with another tenant
- Take in a lodger
- Assign their tenancy to another person
- Sublet part or all of their home
- Make alterations to their property without permission
An introductory tenancy may be ended if any terms of the tenancy agreement are broken. This includes criminal activity, anti-social behaviour and rent arrears. Where there are issues with the conduct of the tenancy, which are not sufficiently serious enough to end it, we may extend the introductory period for six months and then review again.
