Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters. They show you how much you are spending in pounds and pence and how much energy you are using in near real time.
What are Smart Meters?
Smart Meters are being installed in homes across Great Britain at no extra cost, to replace traditional meters, including prepay meters.
Smart meters measure how much gas and electricity you’re using, as well as what it’s costing you, and display this on a handy in-home display.
What do smart meters do?
A smart meter sends automatic meter readings securely to your energy supplier, so that you get accurate bills – and put an end to estimates and manual meter readings. When your energy bill arrives you’ll already know exactly what’s in it.
When is the rollout happening?
The smart meter rollout is happening between now and 2020. When you can get a smart meter depends on:
1. who your energy supplier is – suppliers are rolling out smart meters to their customers at different times
2. where you live – while all homes will receive a smart meter houses will receive smart meters before flats, while small flats will receive meters before large blocks of flats
I’m on pre-pay – can I get a smart meter?
Yes. Smart meters will make prepay as easy as pay-as-you-go on your mobile and bring plenty of other smart meter benefits for pre-pay customers.
