Do you know what you would do if there was a fire in your home?
A well-practiced escape plan could be a lifesaver.
Make sure you have an escape plan involving everyone who lives in your home, and share the plan with any visitors.
Here are some top tips to consider from West Midlands Fire Service:
- The best escape route is the normal way in and out of your home.
- Make sure everyone knows where your door and window keys are kept.
- Think of any difficulties you may have getting out, e.g. at night you may need a torch.
- Keep the route and exits clear of obstructions.
- Think about how children, older or disabled people or pets will get out.
- Choose a second escape route, in case your first choice is blocked.
Never be tempted to tackle a fire yourself, however small it appears, always call 999.
Information for high rise residents
We operate a Stay Put policy for all of our high rise buildings.
If there’s a fire in your own flat:
- Get everyone out of your flat, close the doors behind you and stay out.
- Leave the building by the stairs. Do not use the lift.
- Call 999 to report the fire.
- Meet the fire service on arrival to brief them on the fire.
If there’s a fire in another flat:
- Stay in your flat. If you are in a communal area, get out by using the stairs.
- Call 999 to report the fire.
- Close all doors and windows and stay put.
- Only leave your flat if you feel at risk from smoke, fire, or are asked to leave by the fire service.
Can everyone in your flat leave safely if asked to by the fire service?
