As part of Solihull Independent Living Service (SILS), we provide a free Home Hazard check to help you stay safe and independent in your own home.

Our aim is to reduce the risk of falls by identifying potential hazards and offering practical equipment that can make everyday living safer and easier.

During our visit, we can also make referrals to other community services that can offer support, such as practical equipment:

  • Community Advice Hubs
  • Adult Social Care
  • Solihull Falls Clinic
  • Adult Social Care Sensory Services (for sight and hearing support)
What to expect

We will visit you at home to carry out an assessment and:

  • identify any hazards or risks that may increase the chance of falls
  • recommend practical changes to improve safety
  • order any fit any equipment or aids such as:
    • internal and external grab rails, banister rails and newel posts
    • toilet seat raisers and frames
    • bath boards, seats and steps
    • shower chair and stools
    • bed leavers
    • leg lifters or grabbers
    • bed raisers and tables
    • chair raisers and perching stools
    • Dycem nonslip mat
    • kitchen trolley
    • half step

After the assessment, we will provide recommendations tailored to your home and your needs. If equipment is required, we will arrange for it to be delivered and installed.

How to access the service

To receive this free service, you must:

  • be a Solihull resident
  • be 18 years old or over
  • have a risk of falls or a history of falls

Cost

This service is free of charge for eligible Solihull residents. All equipment provided as part of the Home Hazard Check is also free.

Some optional items, such as personal alarm systems, may have a small cost. We will discuss this with you during your appointment if you would like more information.

Additional packages

We can also offer small home improvements including:

  • installation of a low‑cost personal alarm system for emergency support
  • small handyperson tasks such as refitting loose carpets or easing sticking doors for an hourly charge

Larger home adaptations, including level access showers, stair lifts, drop‑down rails and ramps, are not provided through our Home Hazard Check service.
