Fly-tipping means dumping waste illegally.
Where fly-tipping takes place in and around buildings, the contractor responsible for grounds maintenance will remove the items.
SCH staff will supplement this activity when necessary. A judgement is made as to whether the items present a safety risk, if so, the items will be removed as soon as possible (usually the same day), while other items are usually removed within ten working days.
For fly-tipping in other areas, such as Council managed land, SMBC has a responsibility to act on reports of fly tipping to remove the waste and to locate and prosecute the offenders. Where waste is hazardous the council has a responsibility to ensure public safety until such time as the waste can be removed.
If you have witnessed a fly-tip taking place, please let SMBC know by calling 0121 704 8000.
There is also a Support Home Page online where issues can be reported.
Fly-tipping will be investigated within 5 working days. Once this has been completed SMBC aim to remove fly-tipping within 2 working days but this may take longer if further investigation by the Environmental Crime Unit is required.
Household Waste
Solihull Council provides services to help you get rid of household waste. Many are free of charge but some you must pay for. You can find the details for that service here.
We also offer a bulky waste service, if you have an unwanted bulky item we may be able to remove this item for a charge.
Every householder in the UK must make sure that they get rid of their waste in accordance with the law. That means you must take reasonable steps to make sure that anyone who takes your waste away is authorised to do so.
An authorised person is either a registered waste carrier or a site that holds a waste management licence. If you don’t check that your waste is collected by an authorized person you are committing a criminal offence. If you are convicted you could be fined up to £5,000.
If you arrange for any waste to be collected, other than through us or the Council, you should:
- ask the contractor if they are a registered waste carrier and ask them for their registration number
- phone the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 to confirm that they are registered, or check online on the Environment Agency’s public registers page
- record details of the contractor, their name, address, phone number and the registration number of their vehicle.
If the contractor is not a registered waste carrier, report them to Environmental Health by calling 0121 704 8369, or emailing environmentalhealth@solihull.gov.uk
