A guide on how to register as homeless. (pdf 927 kB)
If you are aged between 16-24 we will refer you to the Solihull Youth Hub (St. Basils) who will look to support you.
You must be eligible for assistance, that is normally resident in the UK and not subject to immigration control. If we believe you are not eligible we will provide you with a letter advising you of why we believe you are not eligible for assistance.
If you do not meet immigration or residence conditions we only have to provide you with advice and assistance.
What happens Next?
- Call our contact centre on 0121 717 1515 and select option 2. They will take basic details from you including your current address (or address history), your household details e.g. who lives with you
- Our Housing Options Team will then contact you to go through an online assessment with you taking more details of your reasons for homelessness, address history, medical history etc. This is a telephone assessment and usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour. If you would prefer this assessment is conducted face to face let the advisor know, you may however have to wait a little longer for this initial assessment to be carried out.
- The advisor will take information about your housing circumstances, they may at this point only offer advice and assistance and request that you provide additional supporting paperwork to help us to determine whether you are threatened with homelessness within 56 days. For example, if you have been served with a notice from your landlord we can check that the landlord has given you the correct notice. If they have not we can contact them on your behalf and explain that they will have to give you the correct notice. We will also talk to your landlord about why they have asked you to leave.
- If we establish that you are homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days you will be offered an meeting with a specialist Housing Options Officer who will develop a personalised housing plan (PHP) with you, this plan will form the basis of an agreement between you and us to try to prevent or resolve your current housing circumstances. You are required to work with us in order to resolve your housing difficulties.
- We will do everything we can to try to prevent your homelessness and alongside that will be carrying out a full investigation into your homeless circumstances.
- Please register for assistance using the Jigsaw Housing portal. You will need an email address to register but once accepted you will be able to see your letters, documents, Personal Housing Plan and be able to share information with your Housing Officer in seconds.
If we can’t prevent your homelessness your application will move into the ‘relief’ period
- This means that we will assess your application using the five legal tests:
- 1. Are you eligible for assistance
- 2. Are you homeless or threatened with homelessness within the next 56 days
- 3. Are you in priority need
- 4. Are you homeless intentionally
- 5. Do you have a local connection to Solihull.
