Solihull Community Housing has to meet standards set by the Government’s Regulator of Social Housing which help to make sure customers are provided with safe, well-maintained homes and receive high-quality services.

These are called Consumer Standards and they are made-up of four parts:

  • Safety and Quality Standard – Providing safe, good quality homes with good quality services
  • Transparency, Influence and Accountability Standard – Treating tenants with fairness and respect so they can access services, raise concerns, influence decision making and hold landlords to account
  • Neighbourhood and Community Standard – Landlords engaging with relevant parties so tenants can live in safe well-maintained neighbourhoods and feel safe in their homes
  • Tenancy Standard – Providing fair allocation and letting of homes and management of tenancies

What is the Competence and Conduct Standard?

In February 2024, the then Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), now Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) launched a consultation on the Competence and Conduct Standard. This is one of a series of government consultations on the implementation of the Social Housing Regulation Act, which received Royal Assent in July 2023.

The Competence and Conduct Standard aims to introduce a national framework for promoting high standards and professionalism within the social housing sector through the introduction of new measures on professionalisation.

The standard aims to introduce high levels of professionalism by requiring people who deliver social housing services to have, or gain, specific qualifications related to their work.

In the coming months MHCLG will be directing the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) to set a standard on the competence and conduct of staff.

Ahead of the new standard coming into force, SCH are working on a plan to ensure we meet and exceed the standards proposed in the consultation.  We will add further updates as we receive them.
