Below we’ve shared a number of case studies, detailing how our Aids and Adaptations service could support you or a loved one.
Case Study One
Why was the telecare needed?
Client X is 42 years old and is a Wheelchair user, with a history of falls. Client X has Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. The epilepsy means Client X is at a higher risk of falls, and can drop from a standing position, meaning the there is also an increased risk of injury during a fall.
What did we install – description of kit and its capability
- Epilepsy Sensor for during the night. The epilepsy sensor is placed under the bed and is able to detect the onset of seizure type activity during the night.
- Falls Pendant, which is able to alert automatically in the event of a fall, without the customer having to physically press the button
- Safe and Sound service, providing 24/7 access to responder service
What has been the outcome?
- Client X feels more confident and safe being at home with the alarm system in place
- The epilepsy sensor allows alerts to be sent to responders in the event of a seizure throughout the night, ensuring the appropriate medical support can be given
- The falls detector picks up any falls that may occur as a result of a seizure, again ensuring emergency response can be contacted at any time. It allows Client X the ability to still complete day to day independent living tasks safely, including showering, getting dressed etc, knowing that if Client X has a fall and is unable to get up/injured, support will be contacted
- All equipment allows Client X to be able to continue to live independently in her own home, without the need for 24/7 care.
- Comments from Client X ‘ Yes, it does help me keep safe in my home. I need this system it makes me know someone will know about me falling and will get me help’.
Case Study Two
Why was the telecare needed?
Child Z lives at home with Mom and 3 other siblings. Child Z has additional needs including autism. Child Z has been found trying to get out of the house in the night. Mom often does not hear him getting up. Child Z was assessed and recommended for a bed sensor, which fits under the sheet on top of his bed.
What did we install – description of kit and its capability
- The bed occupancy sensor works by registering his weight, and then alerts as soon as Child Z gets up and off the mattress. This then triggers an alert through to Mom, who is able to quickly get up and check all is ok.
- We also provided door sensors for Child Z- these are fitted on the door and the door frame, and alert at any time that the door is opened. Child Z’s mom is able to specify times for these to be active- this is currently between the hours of 9pm and 6am, so that if Child Z opens the front door at any point during these times, it will again alert through to Mom.
What has been the outcome
- Child Z is able to remain safely within the family unit at home, with his siblings, and Mom is able to sleep well, knowing that she will be alerted if Child Z gets up out of bed and again if Child Z was to open the front door.
- This also provides a safer environment for Child Z, as the risk is hugely reduced of him being able to exit the house at night without anyone knowing
Case Study Three
Why was the telecare needed?
Client X is a young mom with learning disabilities. Client X was experiencing regular dizzy episodes and would often fall and pass out as a result of these. DD has a young child under 2, whom she is the sole carer for.
Client X used to struggle to remember to take her tablets and would sometimes miss her medication which had made her unwell, and lead to hospital admissions, with her child having to go into respite foster care during these periods as she had no one else to support her in caring for her.
What did we install – description of kit and its capability
Falls Alarm – Will activate on own if has an impact fall also has a button on you can press if needed
Pills dispenser, will alarm for each time medication is needed if not taken after a set time the tray will close off and will only administer the next dose at the set time after 30 mins if not taken alarm will go through to the control centre who will call and prompt responders/client to take their medication.
What has been the outcome
Client X now takes her medication at the correct times, which therefore prevents her from having regular dizzy episodes, triggering falls.
The falls detector also means that if Client X does fall and pass out, help is alerted quickly and responders are able to get to Client X swiftly and take appropriate action to ensure Client X and her daughter are safe.
These things combined have reduced the number of admissions to hospital for Client X and therefore the number of times Client X daughter has had to spend in respite foster care
Case Study Four
Why was the telecare needed?
Client X is 49 years old and has Fredric’s Ataxia condition which affects nerves and muscles and is a permanent wheelchair user.
Client X health’s condition impacts severely on her muscles, and her ability to reposition herself, and ability to summon help in an emergency.
What did we install – description of kit and its capability
Digital unit with pendant- enabled to be plugged into any location in property, does not need to be installed by phoneline
CO2 detector – Used to detect CO2 within property- Linked to monitoring centre
2x smoke alarms – Used to detect smoke/fire within the property- Linked to monitoring centre
Safe and Sound service – Access to 24/7 responder service
What has been the outcome
Client X is able to summon help in the event of an emergency via access to the pendant alarm at all times. As SF is on the Safe and Sound Service, access is also available to 24/7 responder service. This means in the event of help being requested via the pendant, if Client X own responders were unavailable, a member of Wellbeing team would attend to complete welfare check.
The smoke and CO2 detectors ensure that in the event of a fire or CO2 leak in the property, help is accessible directly and quickly, with immediate links to fire service.
Client X has said this ‘now allows more independence, offering the opportunity to get support if needed for self and/or carers in an emergency.’
Client X dad said this equipment offers them peace of mind, as it does for Client X
