There are many reasons people become homeless. With these reasons in mind we have developed
several ways of helping tenants and leaseholders keep their homes.
Domestic abuse
If you have suffered domestic
abuse, you may be afraid to stay in your home. You may want to leave your home
as a way of avoiding abuse.
We receive many applications for housing from people who have left their homes in order to
escape domestic abuse.
We have been looking at ways to help sufferers of abuse to stay in their homes and feel safe
there, rather than leaving.
The Sanctuary Scheme is a project that helps those who have suffered domestic violence feel
safer in their homes. First of all the police and the Homecheck Team assess the person who has
suffered violence. They may then fit security devices to make their home more secure against
unwanted visitors. For more information about the Sancturay Scheme see the staying in your home page.
Family disputes
If your parents ask you to leave the family home, you and your parents will be asked to attend a
number of meetings with one of our three trained mediators. You will have the opportunity to
discuss problems and sort them out so that you can carry on living with your parents.
If you cannot continue living with your parents after mediation, the housing advice team can
help you look at other options.
Money problems
If you are having difficulty paying your mortgage, or if you fall behind with the rent, we can
help you get advice on dealing with debt and managing
your money. We can contact your lender or creditors on your behalf to make arrangements with them
to deal with any problems.
If you become homeless we will pass your details to a caseworker who will find out whether we
have a legal duty to provide you with accommodation. We may arrange temporary accommodation for you
if you have nowhere to stay whilst we are investigating your case.
