According to the law a person is homeless if they and their family do not have anywhere to live
in the UK or anywhere else in the world.
Every local authority should deal with homeless people in the same way. The rules are set out in
the Housing Act 1996 (as amended by The Homelessness Act 2002).
You may be homeless, or threatened wih homelessness if:
- you have been evicted illegally
- you are experiencing, or are likley to experience violence if you contine to live in your
home
- you cannot stay in your home due to exceptional circumstances
- you have been issued with a notice to quit or a possession order, or you don't have
permission to stay in your home.
This section gives information on homelessness, the advice and help we may be able to offer and
our role in helping to prevent homelessness.
